Believe it or not it doesn't. It just changes those bars under your name in posts, like reputation used to.....

It seems to say something on the 'messages' link....which says I have 3 messages, although I haven't got any actual 'messages' :-s

Probably alerts about replies to posts or likes.

You can go here and set what you'd like to be notified of.

I untick everything except "Likes On Posts".

To get rid of existing notifications, there's a delete button next to each.
