Why so much spam?

We are looking to upgrade to VB 5 (from 4.2) and I signed up here to play around with a VB5 forum to see how well it works and the features and such. First thing I noticed is that there is a TON of spam on the site. Is that a problem with VB5? How are all these spammers posting here?

This is just a demo site...I don't come here every day and there's no real spam controls turned on here, plus no email verification.

Forum software in itself cannot be susceptible to spam, it's all about how you defend against it. Q&A is the best defence, but spammers will always get through to some degree.

I've just turned on the stopforumspam functionality, so that should curt it down considerably.
